September Newsletter - Making Connections as a Milspouse

Hi Friend!

This month we're talking about friendships as a military spouse. This is such a tricky subject when you know that there's likely another move coming eventually. It's easy to fall into thinking that it's not worth the effort to make connections and build friendships, only to have to say goodbye yet again. The truth is that we need those connections, even if they come with tearful goodbyes!

I hope that you have a network of friends already, but if not, let today be the day you begin to reach out and intentionally build those friendships. It's so very worth it!

Military Spouse Friendships

I hear from a lot of spouses about the topic of friendship, and I know how difficult it can be to find friends as a military spouse. It’s not easy to roll into a new location and not know a soul. On this short episode, I’m sharing some thoughts about how to be a friend, how to find friends, and the friends every military spouse needs, along with reading a brief excerpt from my book You Are Not Alone: Encouragement for the Heart of a Military Spouse.

We Need Each Other

Friend.

What a loaded word. Some of us have a best friend we’ve known since kindergarten, others struggle to even make or keep friends, while the lucky ones seem to make friends wherever they go.

We so often hear the message that we need to stand on our own two feet and rely on ourselves, that we come to internalize the idea that “I can get by just fine on my own.” And while we might be able to, why would we want to?

Military spouses know we don’t have the luxury to take time or ease into making friends, as we’re often in a location for only a few years. Yet sometimes it can still seem not worth it when it comes to friendships.

It’s hard to get to know someone, and even more difficult to know that even when you find a “kindred spirit” you’ll likely be saying goodbye soon. Plus, we’re independent. We have to be! But a good friend who will walk alongside you through this life is oh, so worth it.
